Reaching every farmer, herder and fisher on the phone already in their hand — and doing it sustainably, beyond any single project.
Agriculture and livestock sustain more than 80% of Somalia’s people and contribute around 70% of GDP. Yet the sector is held back by recurring climate shocks, weak access to inputs and advice, heavy post-harvest losses and fragmented data. Fewer than one in ten farmers is reached by any mobile advisory service.
Most digital tools that try to help are built for a single project and disappear when the funding ends. Somali farmers were left with knowledge gaps that cost them yields, income and resilience — season after season.
Somalia has one of the most active mobile-money ecosystems in Africa, but rural farmers rely on basic phones, not smartphones. So we built M-Tacab around that reality: USSD, SMS and voice — usable by anyone, regardless of literacy or device, in Somali.
Since 2023, M-Tacab has grown into a national platform serving 243,824 active subscribers across crops, livestock and fisheries — delivering daily advisory, weather and alerts that farmers can actually use.
With Hormuud as telecom partner, M-Tacab reaches across Hormuud, Telesom and Golis, with airtime-based billing that works without banks.
Farmers pay small weekly, monthly or yearly amounts via airtime — sponsored by programs at first, graduating to self-paying as they see value.
Vouchers, cooperatives, market linkage and finance activate with partners — turning the platform into infrastructure, not a project.
One shared registry and core serve every program, cutting duplication and the cost of reaching farmers.
The live platform is the foundation. The full M-Tacab ecosystem — cooperatives, input vouchers, market linkage, finance and program tools — is already built and ready, waiting only for partners to switch each module on for the farmers and programs that need it.
Our vision is simple: one trusted system that connects Somali farmers, programs and markets — and lasts for decades, not project cycles.
